Can incorporating CBD into your bedtime routine promote healthier sleeping cycles?
Although research on the topic is still developing, individuals are increasingly turning to CBD as a natural yet potent remedy for poor sleeping habits. A recent survey conducted by Consumer Reports found that 10% of Americans who reported trying CBD as a sleep aid experienced positive improvements with little to no reported side effects.
These results are largely thanks to the complex nature of our endocannabinoid system, which consists of a vast web of cannabinoid receptors within our brain and central nervous system. The two primary receptors are the Cannabinoid Receptor Type 1, also known as CB1, and the Cannabinoid Receptor Type 2, or CB2. When CB1 and CB2 react with various cannabinoids such as CBD, they help to monitor our appetite, moods, circadian rhythm, and several other bodily functions. Therefore, in addition to easing stress, anxiety, and chronic pain, cannabidiol may also reduce insomnia and promote healthier waking and sleeping patterns. Additionally, CBD can help curb grogginess and excessive daytime exhaustion associated with poor sleep.
According to a 2014 case report, four patients regularly treated with CBD experienced a reduction in REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) related events, such as nightmares or “active behavior during dreaming.” Similarly, a 2018 study for the National Center for Biotechnology Information including over four hundred people found that the use of cannabidiol provided “significant symptom relief” when it came to insomnia and other sleep-related disorders.
Researchers also found that cannabidiol is “generally believed to be much safer” than other “conventional prescription pharmaceutical sleep aids,” such as benzodiazepines or antidepressants.
